What is the biggest problem that new managers face in managing their time?

You can’t manage your time successfully if you don’t know how to spend it. The biggest problem for new managers is understanding their priorities and goals. They are unsure what to do. Because of this suspicion, new managers often spend time working on the wrong things i.e. (not linked to priorities) or letting others drag them into activities not directed to priorities and goals. To gain a better understanding of how you spend your time, work with your supervisor to clarify expectations and responsibilities. At the same time, start controlling how long your new responsibilities need to be able to better estimate and plan your time as you advance to the new role.

Is it reasonable to postpone important tasks?

We often delay work on a task until we have the main information or resources. Also, it is often better not to work on jobs that require sensitivity and clarity of mind when we are angry, tired, or anxious. You cannot say (no) whenever you want to, but if you are firm in setting limits, then these times when you cannot say (no) will be less frequent.

What if it is impossible to determine how long an order will take?

Logically, the difficulty in estimating time lies in the loss of experience dealing with this type of matter. Regardless of the task, a specific level of time management and estimation is required to be applied to control costs resulting from inconvenience in time. Some tasks, such as hiring the right person or pursuing creative professions, seem impossible to estimate, but they begin to divide the task using the best estimates. Calculate how many people you need to meet and how long each interview will last. Work on other tasks, such as the time required to verify the references mentioned, review the CV, rewrite job description, and so on. Once the task is divided into its component parts, the estimate of total time will become clearer.

Another way to estimate the time needed for a task that may be unfamiliar to you is to seek help. Find a colleague with knowledge of this task and ask him for advice.

The better you are at estimating time, the more you will be satisfied with your ability to achieve your goals while setting yourself.

I always forget my first priorities because I am immersed in daily work issues. How can I avoid this?

Commitment to your priorities is more a matter of compliance than anything else. If others are interrupting your work continuously, you should set some basic laws, for example, ask not to interrupt during the “break period and the door is closed.” If there is not enough time in your day, you should review the distribution of your time with your manager and find alternative solutions. The common problem is simply that you have a lot of work to do.

What should I do if I spend a long time on something that I am not good at?

This depends on several things. It is more comfortable to work on things that you do well, but do not completely ignore your weaknesses. The solution is to identify and develop these weaknesses that hinder your growth and success. For example, a middle-aged sales clerk would be uncomfortable dealing with modern technology, but she would need to fasten belts and learn how to use a computer to stay in the business.

On the other hand, spending time on your weaknesses that you are not eager to improve or that does not stand in the way of your work can be frustrating and a waste of time. In these cases, it is best for you to discover a side action plan and return to activating your strengths at work. You must judge whether activities are what you want to spend your time in developing your personal skills or whether you will need to delegate them to another person.
